Social Media’s Impacts Good and Bad

Miah Arevalo, Staff Writer

Social media is the range of websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Social media can affect your relationships in both a positive and negative way. In my opinion, I think social media does more harm than good. For example, if people spend more time on social media, they start to lose interaction with the people they have relationships with. Rather than engaging in an actual conversation with them, they sit and scroll through social media. Losing that interaction with those people can make your relationships grow distant.

I think people are so set on looking at what others post on social media, and they miss out on things with their friends and families. Another example would be the impact social media has on you. Staring at a screen all day, everyday can cause physical issues like headaches or making you tired as well as effects on your mental health. If you’re tired, you’re again missing out on things. I think it’s important to realize how much you’re on social media in a day, and realize what it’s really doing to you.

Along with the negative, social media can also  impact your relationships in a positive way. For example, if you’re in some type of relationship or friendship that is long distant, social media can help you keep in touch with that person. Having that social media is also a way to keep memories of you and that person with you. If you are in a long distance relationship, social media could be helpful. In all, I think social media does have a negative impact on personal relationships, but there are some positives as well.
