Students should be taught more about other cultures

Many people are ignorant toward things they aren’t sure about, one of those being different cultures. Whether it’s heritage or unique practices, the world is diverse and it’s important to have respect and awareness.

In most schools, you rarely find a class that teaches about international things. It makes American students less informed and less knowledgeable when it comes to the world outside our borders. The United States is involved in many foreign affairs and policies. They make it impossible to not incorporate foreign cultures into our curriculum. When things happen in the world, American teens sometimes don’t know the country exists or where it is on a map. It also raises the questions of why they do things differently based on their laws or practices. If students were provided with the opportunity to learn about foreign relations they would be more inclusive and branch out to try new things. These students would be taken from their norms and forced to see the situations that many cultured people have to endure.

Due to the fact that not everyone lives the same way, many people end up doing or saying the wrong thing. For example, many Americans go overseas and end up in trouble in the place they visit because they didn’t research the laws and regulations. If you plan to go to a new country you should be able to abide by their laws and be understanding, instead of being disrespectful of how they function in their country, because that’s what works for them.

There are a lot of misconceptions about other cultures. Most of the time it’s because you haven’t yet learned about it and you can only base things on what you hear, as well as the things you have been shown. Until you go and experience it for yourself, you shouldn’t form an opinion on what you are uneducated about. Also, learning about what others go through should show you how fortunate you are and how good you have it. The struggles of people in different places are not what you would have to worry about here.
