Threat interrupts school day

On Thursday, August 24 at around 9:30 a.m. staff members were alerted of a bomb threat which required evacuation of the high school.

Principal Jennifer Fasick made getting information to law enforcement a priority. She said, “The first step was to get as much information as possible about the threat to law enforcement.” She also emailed all of the teachers to inform them of the situation and the steps they were to follow.

Senior Megan Yiengst was worried due to the lack of updates. Yiengst said,  “I was definitely anxious sitting and waiting with no real updates about the situation for so long.” She is also housing senior Julia Abdou, an exchange student from Brazil, so she was also concerned about her wellbeing.

Sophomore Aubrey Coble is not letting the incident worry her. She said, “I personally left it behind because nothing ended up happening and while it was a little scary in the moment, everyone was safe in the end.” It is important that everyone was safe as that was one of the top priorities for the administration and teachers.

Fasick reflects on the atmosphere after returning to the building. “I believe students knew we were being as honest and transparent with them as possible, and that we would never put them in a situation in which they were not safe.” She feels there was an overall calmness upon return even with all of the confusion.

Coble said her parents also believed the school to be safe. “I did stay for the rest of the school day because my parents trusted that the school was safe and didn’t want us missing anything.” Although quite a few teachers did not continue teaching their lessons, the students who stayed were sure to not miss anything.

Fasick wants everyone to know just how proud she is about how they reacted during an important time. “I can’t stress enough how proud I am of how everyone reacted and worked together.”
