At Dover Area High School, there is a leakage problem. This is a problem because of the cost that comes with repairing affected ceilings and the secondary costs from the damage. However, financial concerns are not the only concerns to come out of the leaks.
Currently, the problem is prevalent in the English hallway, where multiple trash cans are being used to contain the leakage. When a storm occurs, the inadequate waterproofing of the building causes further leakage.
If this problem continues, the people in the affected leakage area could possibly be exposed to mold and mildew, something detrimental to one’s respiratory health. According to the CDC, individuals with asthma or other respiratory issues can be affected severely.
This is not just a Dover issue; it is an issue present in office buildings, schools and other non-industrial buildings. Individuals report symptoms of headaches, fatigue, irritation of eyes, nose and throat, lack of concentration or rhinitis and sinusitis, all the result of exposure to mold from inadequate waterproofing.
To prevent the health problems associated with mold and mildew exposure, Dover needs to invest in the maintenance of these facilities.
