On Tuesday, Oct. 10, our girls soccer team celebrated Senior Night by defeating Kennard-Dale 5-2. Senior Taylor Steinginger scored one goal, senior Cameryn Lunsford scored one goal, senior Shaylee Shimmel scored one goal, and sophomore Lois Falls scored two goals.
Shimmel has played soccer for 13 years, so parting from this sport will definitely be emotional. “I was definitely sad, because I am going to miss all the girls and playing with them, but we also have two more games left, so it’s not completely over.” After the very last game of the season there is no doubt she will be even more emotional, especially when it comes time for the seniors to give their speeches at the “End of Year” Banquet.
Lunsford felt that scoring a goal that night was something special. “Scoring on senior night was so special, our team has faced so much adversity and hardships this year with losing half of our starting lineup, losing close games, giving up leads, and not achieving the goals that were completely in reach for us was hard.” The best part for her, is turning around after scoring and immediately getting hugs from her teammates, it’s something she will miss.
Shimmel loves all of the girls in the program and will miss them all after the season. “We are like a little family and I will truly miss them all when I graduate.” She will be going to Lebanon Valley College to continue playing soccer.
Growing up with these girls the past 12 years is something Lunsford will remember for a long time. “Since I started this sport with these girls there have been those days, months, and years where I spent more time with them than my own family…We all changed, grew up, matured, and became stronger together. I have loved having the opportunities I did with these girls and the memories I have been blessed with with them, are forever irreplaceable.” She hasn’t yet processed the emotions from her time with soccer coming to an end, but she is confident there will never be another group of people like that in her life.
