Students miss out on prom

Prom is one of those things that some people have been thinking about since they were little kids, maybe watching older siblings prepare for theirs. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, the class of 2020 senior prom and class of 2021 junior prom was canceled.

Senior Halle Davis wanted to have fun and party with her friends one last time before she went off to college. “My initial reaction to finding out prom was canceled was that I wasn’t surprised at all. I figured it was going to happen, but I was still upset and disappointed due to the fact that I wasn’t going to have the senior prom everyone dreams of.”

Juniors who will still have a chance to attend prom next year are also upset by the cancelation of prom. “I do think prom was ruined by the pandemic. I know a lot of people who spent lots of money on dresses that they’ll never wear,” says junior Khalie Grim. Grim understands that this unavoidable. “It’s no one’s fault that prom was canceled.”

By now, prom would have been over. The pictures would be on Instagram. The memories would have been made to last a lifetime. There was some talk of moving prom to a later date and venue, like North Salem Elementary. Davis said, “I think that we should pick another venue instead of resorting to an elementary school. No one wants their senior prom to be in an elementary school gym.” More information about an alternate plan for prom may still be announced.
